Instructions for installing aluminum or plastic window frames
Installing an aluminum or plastic window frame requires precision and attention to detail. This manual provides step-by-step instructions to ensure that the frame is installed correctly and securely, with a durable and professional result.
Supplies
- Aluminum or plastic frame (custom made)
- Spirit level
- Tape measure
- Drill and screws
- Wedges and adjusting blocks
- PUR foam (for sealing)
- Insulating tape or compression tape
- Impact drill (for concrete walls)
Step 1: Checking the opening
- Check the opening where the frame is to be placed. This must be clean, dry and free of obstacles. Also check whether the recess is level and square. If the opening is not square, level it using mortar or adjusting blocks. Check whether the delivered order is complete and correct. Any damage must be determined on the trestle and recorded with photos.
- If the frame is broken when removing the old window, you must first make a new frame. To firmly secure the cavity batten and prevent draught, spray PUR foam around the cavity batten. This ensures a stable and well-sealed base for the new frames. If you opt for a frame with a stop, make side planks on the sides against which you can pull the frame.
Step 2: Preparing the frame
- Our frames are supplied with a transport profile under the frame, remove this before installation, as well as the handles on the side. If you order frames with glass, the glass is already in the frame. Remove the glass and the rotating parts in order to be able to install the frame properly.
- Apply compression tape or insulation tape around the outside of the frame to ensure an airtight connection to the wall.
Step 3: Install and align the frame
- Carefully place the frame in the recess using wedges and adjusting blocks. Make sure the frame is level, both horizontally and vertically.
- Use a tape measure to check whether the frame is evenly distributed throughout the recess (equal distance between frame and wall).
Step 4: Securing the frame
- Drill the mounting holes in the frame and the wall. It is possible to have the mounting holes pre-drilled. You attach the frame with frame anchors in the adjustment frame.
- Use suitable screws to secure the frame firmly. Start with the corners and work towards the centre points.
- Always check whether the frame remains level while tightening the screws.
Step 5: Insulation and sealing
- Fill the space between the frame and the wall with PUR foam. Do this carefully, because too much foam can deform the frame. Let the foam harden according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Finish any seams on the inside with sealant for a smooth finish.
Step 6: Install glass (if necessary)
- Place glass blocks in the frame to support the glass evenly. Make sure they are in the right place to distribute the glass weight evenly.
- Carefully place the glass panel into the frame and press it firmly against the glass blocks.
- Attach the glazing beads around the glass to hold the glass in place. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the glazing beads into place.
Step 7: Checking and finishing
- Check that the frame and any rotating parts function smoothly. Adjust the hinges or fittings if necessary.
- Seal any external seams with caulk to ensure a watertight and airtight seal.
- Remove excess PUR foam and clean the frame.
Step 8: Clean up and finish
Clear the work area and check that all demolition material and waste has been removed. Let the frame rest for 24 hours so that the PUR foam can fully harden.
Important tips
- Ensure a dry and stable working environment.
- Avoid screws in the profile of the frame itself to prevent damage.
- Always use the correct type of sealant or foam that is suitable for aluminium or plastic window frames.
- After installation, check that there are no drafts or leaks.
With this step-by-step plan you can install an aluminum or plastic frame correctly and firmly. If you have any doubts, consider hiring a professional for optimal results.
Instructions for accurately measuring window frames
Measuring a frame correctly is essential for a perfect end result. Whether you want to replace a frame or install a new one, careful measuring is the first step to a neat finish. In this guide, we share practical tips and steps for measuring frames.
What exactly are you measuring?
When measuring a frame, everything revolves around the external dimensions. This measurement determines the total dimensions of the frame and must be recorded accurately. Make sure you measure both the width and the height and pay attention to the way in which the frame will be placed.
Important points to note
Measure the width of the opening in which the frame is placed, at three different heights: at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. The smallest of these three measurements is decisive. To keep sufficient space for any movement of the material, subtract 1 cm from this smallest measurement (0.5 cm per side).
To fill this space, you can use compression tape. This material provides a durable, airtight and watertight seal between the frame and the wall.
Horizontal measurement (width)
- Our frames are supplied with a transport profile under the frame, remove this before installation, as well as the handles on the side. If you order frames with glass, the glass is already in the frame. Remove the glass and the rotating parts in order to be able to install the frame properly.
- Apply compression tape or insulation tape around the outside of the frame to ensure an airtight connection to the wall.
Vertical measurement (height)
To determine the height, repeat the process as for horizontal measurement. Measure at three points and use the smallest measurement. If there is no sill, measure from wall to wall and subtract 1 cm.
For a window sill, measure from the wall to the sill and subtract 2 cm (1 cm for the sill and 0.5 cm per side). Note that a window sill can slope, which can affect the final size.
Helpful tips for accurate measuring
- Always measure from the outside of the facade.
- Use a quality tape measure for precise results.
- Double check your measurements to avoid mistakes.
Leave the measuring to a specialist
Although it is possible to measure frames yourself, we recommend that you leave this to an experienced professional. This way you can be sure that the measurements are correct and you avoid misunderstandings. Ideally, the measuring should be done by the person who is also taking care of the installation.
Please note: the dimensions specified must always include any stop or wall connection.

Step-by-step plan: Removing a frame
Removing a frame is a careful process that must be carried out step by step. With this clear step-by-step plan you can safely and efficiently loosen the old frame, while ensuring that surrounding materials are damaged as little as possible.
1. Remove rotating parts
Start by removing the movable parts, such as windows or doors. Hinges and fittings are dismantled, leaving only the fixed frame.
2. Remove fixed glass
If there is glass in the frame, cut the sealant edges around the glass loose with a Stanley knife. Remove the glazing strips and use a glass suction cup to carefully remove the glass from the frame. Ensure safe transport of the glass to prevent damage.
3. Loosen the intermediate posts and sills
Cut any intermediate posts or sills in two places. Remove the middle piece so that the rest is easier to loosen. Repeat this process for all posts and sills in the frame.
4. Demolish exterior posts and sills
Remove the outer posts and sills in the same way. Try to keep the existing cavity batten intact, so that it can be reused. This prevents extra work and maintains the insulating function of the cavity batten.
5. Checking the lintel and damp-proof course
When removing the lintel, check for a damp-proof course. Old damp-proof courses, often made of lead, can often be reused. Make sure they are treated carefully to avoid unnecessary replacement.
6. Clean up workspace
Clean the work area and remove all demolition debris. Check the frame for any remaining debris and clean thoroughly.
7. Fixing the cavity batten
To firmly secure the cavity batten and prevent draught, spray PUR foam around the cavity batten. This provides a stable and well-sealed base for the new frames.
Important
Work safely when removing a frame. Wear protective clothing and work equipment, and ensure adequate support for heavy parts such as glass or large frame posts. If in doubt, it may be wise to call in a professional.
This step-by-step plan will help you carefully remove a frame and prepare the space for the installation of a new frame.
