Instructions for accurately measuring doors
Measuring a door correctly is essential for a perfect end result. Whether you want to replace a door or install a new one, careful measuring is the first step to a smooth finish. In this guide, we share practical tips and steps for measuring doors.
What exactly are you measuring?
When measuring a door, it’s all about the external dimensions. This measurement determines the overall dimensions of the door and must be recorded accurately. Make sure you measure both the width and the height, taking into account the way the door will be installed.
Important points to note:
- Always measure horizontally and vertically.
- Note the smallest dimensions, as this size is the leading one.
- Please allow sufficient leeway when specifying dimensions.
- Take into account the thickness of the sill. An Isostone sill has a thickness of 55 mm and a flat sill a thickness of 20 mm.
Horizontal measurement (width)
Measure the width of the opening in which the door will be placed, at three different heights: at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. The smallest of these three measurements is decisive. To leave enough space for any movement of the material, subtract 1 cm from this smallest measurement (0.5 cm per side).
To fill this gap, you can use compression tape. This material provides a durable, airtight and watertight seal between the door and the wall.
Vertical measurement (height)
To determine the height, repeat the process as for horizontal measurement. Measure at three points and use the smallest measurement. If there is no sill, measure from wall to wall and subtract 1 cm.
Take into account the thickness of the threshold. An Isostone threshold has a thickness of 55 mm and a flat threshold a thickness of 20 mm. Also measure the size inside and make sure that you end up with the threshold in relation to the floor.
Helpful tips for accurate measuring
- Always measure from the outside of the facade.
- Use a quality tape measure for precise results.
- Double check your measurements to avoid mistakes.
Leave the measuring to a specialist
Although it is possible to measure doors yourself, we recommend that you leave this to an experienced professional. This way you can be sure that the dimensions are correct and you avoid misunderstandings. Ideally, the measuring should be done by the person who is also responsible for the installation.
Please note: the dimensions specified must always include any stop or wall connection.
