Instruction: Installing a Plastic or Aluminum Sliding Door
Installing a plastic or aluminum sliding door requires precision and the right materials. Follow the steps below to install the sliding door firmly and correctly, so that it works smoothly and is well insulated.
Supplies
- Plastic or aluminum sliding door (including frame and sliding door)
- Tape measure
- Spirit level
- Wedges and adjusting blocks
- Drill and plugs
- Screws (stainless steel, suitable for plastic or aluminium)
- PUR foam and compression tape
- Kit (waterproof and elastic)
- Screwdrivers
- Hammer
- Vacuum cleaner
Step 1: Preparing the recess
- Check the recess for the correct dimensions. There must be at least 5-10 mm of space all around for insulation and mounting.
- Make sure the recess is clean, dry and free of obstructions. Remove old sealant residue, mortar or damage with a chisel or multi-tool.
- Check that the recess is square and level. If necessary, level the wall or remove the misalignment with adjusting blocks.
Step 2: Preparing the frame
- Check that the sliding door frame is complete and free of damage.
- Attach the sill and any accessories, such as ventilation grilles, to the frame.
- Apply compression tape or insulating tape to the back of the frame (contact surface with the wall).
Step 3: Install and align the frame
- Place the frame in the recess using wedges and adjusting blocks. Make sure it is evenly centered and has enough space all around.
- Use a spirit level to make sure the frame is completely straight. Check both horizontally and vertically.
- Make sure the sill is firmly in place and completely flat. This is crucial for the smooth operation of the sliding door. Always place a sliding door on a strong base so that the sill cannot bend.
Step 4: Fixing the frame
- Drill mounting holes through the frame into the wall. Use plugs that are suitable for the type of wall (for example concrete or brick).
- Fix the frame with screws. Start at the corners and work towards the middle. Check regularly in between to make sure the frame remains level.
- Please note: Do not overtighten the screws to avoid deformation of the plastic or aluminium.
Step 5: Insulate and seal
- Carefully fill the space between the frame and the wall with PUR foam. Do not spray too much to prevent deformation.
- Allow the PUR foam to harden according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Seal seams with caulk on both the inside and outside. Ensure the seal is watertight and draft-free.
Step 6: Install sliding door
- Place the sliding door in the rails of the frame.
- Check that the sliding door moves smoothly and remains properly in the track.
Step 7: Finishing
- Check the operation of the sliding door. Make sure the door opens and closes smoothly and locks properly.
- Finish any openings with a finishing profile or sealant.
- Remove the protective film from the plastic or aluminium profiles and clean the sliding door.
Important tips
- Moisture barrier: Check whether the sill has good water drainage to prevent moisture problems.
- Expansion: Ensure there is sufficient space around the material for expansion and contraction.
- Professional help: For large or complex sliding doors, it is wise to call in a professional for installation.
- Maintenance: After installation, regularly check the operation of the sliding door and lubricate the rails with a suitable lubricant if necessary.
With these instructions you can install a plastic or aluminum sliding door correctly and sustainably!
