Instruction: Installing a Plastic Door
Installing a plastic door requires precision to ensure that the door closes properly, is secure and lasts for years. Here is a clear guide to installing a plastic door, including tips for a professional end result.
Supplies
- Plastic door (including frame and hinges and locks)
- Tape measure
- Spirit level
- Wedges and adjusting blocks
- Drill and screws
- Mounting kit and PUR foam
- Caulking gun
- Screwdriver
- Vacuum cleaner
- Chisel or multi-tool (for any adjustments to the recess)
Step 1: Preparing the recess
- Check the recess (the door opening) for the correct dimensions. Make sure there is enough space all around for insulation and mounting (approximately 5-10 mm).
- Check with a spirit level if the opening is level and square. If necessary, level the opening with mortar or adjusting blocks.
- Remove all dirt, dust, old sealant and obstructions from the recess using a vacuum cleaner and chisel.
Step 2: Preparation of the plastic door and frame
- Check the plastic door and frame for damage. Make sure the hinges and locks are complete.
- Pre-attach any accessories, such as ventilation grilles or sill profiles, to the frame.
- Apply compression tape or insulation tape to the outside of the frame for airtight mounting against the wall.
Step 3: Install and align the frame
- Place the frame (without the door) in the recess using wedges and adjusting blocks.
- Make sure the frame is evenly distributed all around in the recess. Check this with a tape measure.
- Use a spirit level to align the frame perfectly horizontally and vertically. Check this on all sides.
Step 4: Fixing the frame
- Drill mounting holes through the frame and into the wall. Make sure the holes are evenly spaced, approximately 30cm apart. Start 10cm from the corners.
- Fix the frame firmly to the wall with plugs and screws. Do not tighten the screws too much to prevent deformation of the plastic.
- Check in between whether the frame remains level. Adjust the wedges or adjusting blocks if necessary.
Step 5: Insulate and seal
- Fill the space between the frame and the wall with PUR foam. Do this carefully to prevent deformation of the frame.
- Allow the foam to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Cut away excess PUR foam and finish the seams on the inside and outside with a caulking gun. Use a waterproof and flexible caulking for this.
Step 6: Hanging the door
- Hang the door in the frame by placing it in the hinges. Make sure the door turns smoothly.
- Adjust the hinges so that the door hangs exactly straight and closes properly. Use the adjusting screws on the hinges for this.
- Check that the hinges and locks work properly and that the door closes smoothly.
Step 7: Checking and finishing
- Check that the door is securely fastened, closes properly and that there is no play between the door and the frame.
- Remove all wedges and adjusting blocks and fill the gaps with sealant or polyurethane foam.
- Clean the frame and door and do not remove the protective film until the work is completed.
Important tips
- Weather resistance: Ensure a good seal on the outside to prevent draughts and moisture.
- Adjustment: After installation, check regularly that the door continues to close properly. Plastic can work due to temperature differences.
- Clearance: Allow 5mm clearance all around between the door and the frame for smooth operation.
- Professional help: If you have any doubts about the placement, you can call in a professional.
With this manual you can install a plastic door correctly and durably, so that it functions without problems for years!
